Siblings (April ’16)

This month has seen quite a drastic change in the girls’ relationship with each other.  The main reason for this is that Sienna has started crawling.  I knew it would be a turning point for them.  I remember when Sienna started sitting up, it causing a similar shift in their relationship.  The more Sienna can do that Ella can, the more Ella finds she can relate to her.

Ella now wants Sienna to move around with her.  She encourages Sienna to follow her.  And, more often than not, it is Ella that is following Sienna round.  Ella mimics Sienna’s crawling, getting down on her level, and moving alongside her, which Sienna absolutely loves.  The giggles that come from both girls’ mouths are so infectious.

Sienna’s crawling has really changed her mood drastically.  She doesn’t cry anywhere near as much now.  I think she must have been so frustrated, not being able to follow us around.  Now, when any of us leave the room, she just follows.  Ella often leaves the room and is then looking round for Sienna, making sure she’s coming too.  And she always is!  “Here comes Sienna” is something we hear numerous times a day now.

It’s made me eager for the days when they can run round together.  I’ve always said it with Sienna, that I’m kind of willing time on so that she can play more with Ella, who just loves the company of other children.  But then I see my baby getting bigger and more independent, and of course I have those pangs for time to slow down.  It’s a catch 22!!  I know in a few months time, these pictures will change again, as Sienna will be up on her feet, walking around.  Toddlerhood is getting so close.  While I can barely remember the days of it just being Ella, at the same time it seems like only yesterday that Ella was meeting her baby sister for the first time.

Ella loves to play with Sienna.  She treats her so tenderly (most of the time), putting on a (slightly patronising!) babyish voice when talking to Sienna, which I guess is her natural way of bringing herself to Sienna’s level.  She’ll sit and ‘read’ a book with her, talking her through the pictures.  It’s such a pleasure to watch.

When Ella was Sienna’s age, we were starting to think about baby number two.  I’m so glad we made that decision then, and that there is less than two years between the two of them.  I hope one day we can give them another sibling.  But that is definitely a while off yet!  In the meantime, I’m more than happy to watch this relationship grow and grow.
