Hi ho, hi ho, it’s back to work I go…Kind of…!!

The beginning of 2014 didn’t just mark the start of a new year.

It also marked my return to work!

Ella is 6 months old now, and I’ve loved spending almost every minute with her over those 6 months.  I love my work, but this has honestly been the best job I’ve ever had!

As I work for myself, I’ve not been completely out of work.  I had my first full day back working when Ella was 2 months old, but didn’t do another full day for another 6 weeks!!  And, I’ve had to check in every day with my emails.   Luckily I have a fab team who have been answering all my emails for me (and will continue to do so, seeing as it’s working so well!), but there are the obvious queries that they’ve got to run past me first!

So, now feels the right time to be more serious about work.  The blessing is that running my own business means I can decide how much work I actually do!  One of the main reasons for starting my own business was so that I could manage my time when I did have kids.  I’ve wanted to be a mum for as long as I can remember, so it was always important to me to spend more time with my children than in work.  The way I think of it, when I reach the end of my (hopefully) very long life, I won’t be saying that I wish I’d made more money.  I definitely would be saying that I wish I’d spent more time with my children.  So, that’s what I’m going to do, and hopefully make some money at the same time!

As of this week, Ella is going to my mother-in-law’s one day a week.  This means I can book some work in, or at least get through a whole day’s work uninterrupted.  Come February, I’m going to look at putting her in nursery one day a week as well, so my full working days can increase to 2 a week!  Then as the year goes on, I may increase her nursery days to 2 a week.  But that is my limit!  I want to spend at least 2 days of the working week with her!

This has meant a few changes to our daily schedules!  When previously I would get jobs done round the house while Ella was napping during the day, or we’d go out walking and she’d nap in the pram, I’m now straight on the computer.  On a good day, I can get 4 hours work done over the course of the day, while Ella is in the house with me.   Even on a bad napping day, I get 2 hours done, and can still do some work in the evening too.  As soon as she is awake, we’re out and about.  Neither of us enjoy being in the house all day!

I’m also fortunate to be able to sell online.  As I provide social media training, I’m able to record these as online sessions.  So, I can effectively make money at any time of the day, no matter where I am!  I love the internet for this!!!

But, the downside to running your own business is when someone needs you on a day when you have no childcare.  I do a lot of speaking engagements, and I can hardly ask someone to change the date of their whole event just because I have no one to watch Ella!  I like to time my parents’ visits (who live in the Isle of Man) with when I have quite a bit of work on!  It works well, because they then get to spend some proper quality time with Ella!  And occasionally, Sean will have to take the odd day’s holiday to look after her while I work.

But overall, the benefits well outweigh this negative!  I would hate to have to go back full time now.  Not because I don’t want to work, but because I don’t want to miss out on so much of Ella’s life while she is so young.
